Will OnePlus release an entry level phone?

At its origin, the OnePlus brand was synonymous with “flagship killer.” At the center of this strategy, we found new phone releases each year with the most efficient Snapdragon processor possible (in the 800 series). Even the OnePlus X, in its time, was fitted with the Snapdragon 801.

In 2020, it is clear that the firm’s strategy has evolved. Evidenced by the release of the OnePlus North with its Snapdragon 765 – a less impressive chip, but still one that’s very powerful for daily use. Is OnePlus is daring to stray further?

A TRULY ENTRY-LEVEL SMARTPHONE?

According to leaker Steve Hemmerstoffer, also known by the pseudonym OnLeaks, the OnePlus brand would be brewing a OnePlus Nord N100 with really downgraded specs:

  • 6.52-inch HD + display (approx. 720 x 1600 pixels)
  • Qualcomm Snapdragon 460 SoC
  • 4 GB of RAM
  • 64 GB of internal storage
  • Rear camera (13 MP, 2 MP Macro; 2 MP portrait mode)
  • 8 MP selfie camera
  • 5000 mAh battery
  • USB-C port
  • 3.5mm jack port

On paper, we find the characteristics of an entry-level smartphone. Even if we let such a low-resolution display (approximately 270 pixels per inch) slide, it’s a little difficult to ignore the processor and the photo module. However, the presence of a 3.5 mm jack port is good news for a lot of us. The high capacity battery should also ensure excellent autonomy for this smartphone.

THE CHEAPEST ONEPLUS SMARTPHONE

If the leaks are true, this might just be the cheapest OnePlus phone yet. Definitely, though, it won’t be a flagship killer.
