Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 3 to have in-screen camera?

According to a report from the Korean site “ETNews”, Samsung would like to integrate a selfie camera hidden behind the screen for its future Galaxy Z Fold 3.

In recent months, manufacturers have been working really hard to be among the first to market a smartphone equipped with a selfie camera hidden behind the screen. However, only the Chinese group ZTE has taken the plunge on a commercial model with the ZTE Axon 20 5G. For the others, we are still waiting for something concrete, even if the demonstrations on the prototype are already suggesting an interesting development.

It is towards the Galaxy Z Fold 3 which would come in the second half of 2021 that all eyes are turning, and the Korean website ET News also goes in this direction by affirming the presence of UDC (Under Display Camera) technology on the next generation of smartphone with foldable screen.

According to the Korean report, Samsung is looking to integrate a camera hidden behind the screen on the Galaxy Z Fold 3, the manufacturer’s next foldable tablet. “Samsung has decided to use this technology for its next foldable smartphone and has started to work on developing the necessary technologies,” said the Korean media.

Two divisions of Samsung would thus be on the job, Samsung Display for the screens and Samsung LSI for the photo sensor. In order to avoid shots that are too dark, as we have seen on some prototypes, Samsung has also decided to space the pixels on the screen, reducing its display density, so that the sensor is less hampered and let the light reach it more easily.

As a reminder, the selfie camera of the Galaxy Z Fold range has already evolved a lot since the first model, launched a year and a half ago. On that first generation, it was embedded in a large notch, positioned at the top right of the screen. On the Galaxy Z Fold 2, Samsung has managed to miniaturize it by integrating it into a punch. However, With the Galaxy Z Fold 3, the manufacturer could thus make it completely disappear behind the foldable Oled screen.

At this time, it is not yet clear when Samsung plans to officially present its Galaxy Z Fold 3. According to ETNews, the smartphone could be presented during the third quarter of next year.
