For better or worse, it’s already February, and that means some of us will celebrate two significant events: Chinese New Year and Valentine’s Day. If you’re celebrating, we hope you are doing so from the safety of your home. And we also wish you take the time to get dolled up because special occasions deserve striking looks!
Now, if you’re lost on what to do, Dyson’s lead stylist Amy Johnson has three looks you can recreate at home, which we’re going to share below.
Round Brush Waves
Johnson said this style would work for those with straight and wavy hair. Think of it as the ’90s supermodel look, giving you that touch of glamour perfect for special occasions.
What you’ll need:
- Wide-tooth comb
- Volumizing spray
- Dyson Airwrap styler
- Short-bristled paddle brush
- Holding style product of choice
- Embellished clips (optional)

How to get the look:
- Wash and towel dry hair. Make sure to comb through it gently. Remember that wet hair is weaker and prone to damage. Use a wide-tooth comb.
- Once hair is free of tangles, add a volumizing spray at the roots and section the hair.
- Next, go in with the Dyson Airwrap styler and Round Volumizing Brush attachment and begin styling underneath the hair section. This attachment is engineered to direct air into the hair and give it body, while the bristles are designed to create tension to shape the hair as it dries.
- For extra volume, lift each section at the root as you dry. Make sure the section is fully dry before moving to the next one. If any moisture is left in the hair, the style will drop out, and you will lose that hard-earned volume.
- To style the ends, flick the section outwards by placing the brush attachment on top of the hair and turning the tool in your hand.
- Once dry, roll the section up and secure it with a sectioning clip. Doing this will allow the hair to fully cool and set into a wavy shape with maximum volume. Repeat this on each section until all the hair is dry and clipped into rolls.
- Allow hair to cool for five minutes before releasing each section. (Do your other party prep in the meantime!) Gently brush the hair through with a short-bristled paddle brush and position it into place. Flick the hair over into a side part.
- Finish with a holding styling product to fix the style in place and increase its longevity.
Soft, Airy Blow-Out
According to Johnson, this look will work for all hair types and different lengths. It gives you a sleek, smooth, and stylish finish that keeps your hair’s natural volume and movement. It’s like your cheat sheet for getting a salon-like blow-out at home.
What you’ll need:
- Wide-tooth comb
- Large paddle brush
- Round brush
- Light hold hair spray
- Styling product of choice (smoothing cream, hair oil, leave-in conditioner)
- Dyson Supersonic hairdryer
- Dyson Corrale straightener or Dyson Airwrap styler

How to get the look:
- Wash your hair first. Towel dry to remove excess moisture and comb through using a wide-tooth comb to ease out knots and tangles gently.
- Apply your preferred styling products.
- Use your Dyson Supersonic hair dryer without an attachment and set it on a high speed and temperature setting. Rough dry the hair until it is about 80% dry.
- For coarser curly and coily hair types, you may want to stretch out the curl with the Supersonic’s Wide Tooth Comb attachment. You can also use the Dyson Airwrap styler’s Firm Smoothing Brush attachment.
- For coarser hair types, skip steps 6-9. Instead, dry your hair thoroughly with the Wide Tooth Comb attachment. And then, use the Dyson Corrale straightener on a medium heat setting to achieve an ultra-smooth finish, reducing excess volume and frizz.
- Once your hair is nearly dry, prep the hair for styling by brushing through with a large paddle brush to remove any tangles caused while drying. Part the hair in your preferred side and section the hair for styling.
- Add the Supersonic’s Smoothing nozzle attachment and turn down the heat setting. Lift the hair upwards and away from the head using a round brush. Hold the hair up until dry to create volume and lift.
- Next, dry the mid-lengths and ends. Position the Smoothing nozzle down the hair section so you can utilize the controlled airflow to help align the cuticles in the hair and leave a smooth, natural finish. You can also use the Dyson Airwrap styler and brush attachments.
- Once the hair is dry, take a round brush and turn the hair’s ends to create a soft shape that frames the face. It will allow the hair to sit more naturally. If you are styling with the Dyson Airwrap styler, you can get this effect with the Round Brush attachment.
- If styling with the Dyson Corrale straightener, you can turn the ends under by softly changing your pass’s angle as you come down the hair tress, tilting the straightener in a curved motion inwards to the face.
- To complete the look, blow the cold shot and Gentle Air attachment to lift the hair and give a light, airy finish.
- Apply your hold product of choice. We recommend a light hold spray because anything too heavy will cause the hair to become crunchy and lose its light softness.
’70s Curl
You can achieve this look with straight, wavy, or curly hair. This nod to the ’70s gives you a free-flowing, carefree look. Johnson said this look adds a bit of bounce to shoulder length hair or a bit of drama for longer, straighter hair.
What you’ll need:
- Medium hold mousse
- Dyson Airwrap styler
- Light hairspray

How to get the look:
- After washing your hair, apply a medium hold mousse. Use the Dyson Airwrap styler’s Pre-styling dryer attachment to remove most of your hair’s moisture until it is just damp. By damp, we mean hair should be 80% dry, appears dry to look, but still feels cold to touch. Section the hair to prep it for styling.
- Attach the 20mm or 30mm Airwrap barrel. Make sure you are using the correct barrel for the side of the face you’re styling (the arrows should point away from the head). And then, set the tool to full heat and speed.
- Place the barrel at the bottom of the section and allow the hair to wrap around. The Dyson Airwrap styler uses Coanda technology, an effect that occurs when a high-speed jet of air flows across a surface. And because of pressure differences in pressure, the airflow attaches itself to the surface.
- Hold the barrel in place for around 30 seconds or until the hair is completely dry before setting with the cold shot for five to 10 seconds to achieve maximum style retention.
- All curls must bend away from the face. To achieve this style around the whole head, make sure to switch your barrel when styling the head’s opposite side.
- Once all sections are curled, turn the head upside down and shake the curls. Gently run your fingers through your hair to texture and body to the style. This action will disrupt the curls to make them look more natural.
- Finally, tip the head back up and position the hair into the desired placement around the face. Fix the style in place with a spritz of light hairspray.
