Dyson has constantly reminded us that cleaner indoor air is essential to help keep us healthy and safe. And after the year we’ve spent mostly in our homes and now the volcanic smog we’re experiencing in Metro Manila, I couldn’t exactly argue against that. So, when the company offered to send over its newest Dyson Purifier Cool Formaldehyde TP09, I jumped at the chance to try it out.
This new air purifier has been designed to automatically sense, capture, and trap pollutants. It comes with new solid-state formaldehyde sensing technology that works to capture and even destroy potentially dangerous volatile organic compounds (VOCs) like formaldehyde.
Why should you care about formaldehyde?
Formaldehyde is a colorless gas pollutant released by furniture and wooden products with formaldehyde-based resins like plywood and fiberboard; insulating materials; and do-it-yourself products such as paint, wallpapers, varnishes; and household cleaning products. If left undetected, it can lead to prolonged exposure, which can pose health risks.
Some studies link it to cancer. It isn’t known how much exposure can increase cancer risk, but we don’t mind erring on the safer side.
These pollutants are 500 times smaller than particles the size of 0.1 microns, so these can be tough to capture. Instead of using gel-based formaldehyde sensors that deteriorate over time, Dyson opted for the solid-state sensor, which uses Dyson’s algorithm to precisely track formaldehyde levels while ignoring the other gasses picked up by a dedicated VOC sensor.
This is paired with Dyson’s Selective Catalytic Oxidisation (SCO) filter that’s designed to continuously destroy formaldehyde at a molecular level. It will basically work to keep formaldehyde out of your home. And the company proudly claims this filter won’t need to be replaced throughout the Purifier Cool Formaldehyde’s lifespan.
Say goodbye to dirty air
Dyson makes sure the Purifier Cool Formaldehyde only releases clean air that it had the whole machine qualified for the HEPA 13 standard. The company’s engineers reworked its airflow pathways to ensure no air bypasses the filter and that there are no leak points where dirty air might enter the airflow. This means Dyson’s latest purifiers remove 99.95% of particles as small as 0.1 microns. It can trap particles like allergens and bacteria from flowers and pets, fumes from cooking and cleaning products, smoke, and more.
Say hello to a quieter machine
One other perk of improving the airflow is making the Purifier Cool Formaldehyde 20% quieter than previous models. This is my first time reviewing a Dyson air purifier, and I didn’t really have any issues with fan noise. It gets drowned out by the noise of electric fans. Even at night, I’ve never felt the need to use the Night mode, which uses the quiet settings and dimmed display of this purifier.
Built to purify your home
Dyson has built its air purifiers to work with spaces in your home. With its Air Multiplier Technology, the Purifier Cool Formaldehyde can project purified air to every corner of your room. It’s best used in a closed room to make sure it can properly clean the air inside.
Industry-standard testing to measure air purifier performance is done in a compact chamber 12m² in size. A ceiling fan circulates the air, and one sensor inside the room measures air quality. For more representative testing, Dyson employed its POLAR test in a larger 27m² room with no added fan and eight sensors in the corners of the room and one sensor at the center to collect air quality data.
It can oscillate for 45 degrees up to 350 degrees, so it can help cool your space. If you don’t want the airflow to hit you, it also has a backward airflow option where airflow is diverted through the back of the machine. This machine has an Auto mode that allows the onboard sensors to adjust settings intelligently according to the air quality in the room.
This Purifier Cool Formaldehyde hasn’t been tested with viruses like COVID-19. The company has never claimed that these purifiers are medical grade. And the Dyson rep we’ve talked to during the briefing of this appliance couldn’t say if there are plans to develop products that address our other health concerns.
An easy setup process
For such a high-tech machine, you don’t have to be well-versed with technology to set it up.

It comes in a big box, but there aren’t many small parts that might confuse you. At 10.7 lbs, it’s also easy to move where you need it.
You’ll have to install the filters yourself, but even that is a simple task, which Dyson has made sure to put on a sticker attached to the purifier and in the short user manual.
Once you’ve placed the filters, you can just plug in the Purifier Cool Formaldehyde and leave it to run.
You don’t even need to set up the app to get it to work. The small magnetic remote has all the controls you need. It’s easy to get acquainted with this high-tech purifier with the remote. You’ll see all the settings on the LCD screen on the machine. And when you’re done with the remote, you can just place it on top of the Purifier Cool Formaldehyde.
While you don’t need the app for initial setup, it is advised you set up the Dyson Link app. It works on both Android and iOS, and the pairing process isn’t intimidating either. The app gives you more information on indoor pollution, temperature, and humidity levels. It’s also how you can keep track of when the filter needs replacing and other maintenance support and troubleshooting. And it can act as a digital controller for the Purifier Cool Formaldehyde.
Speaking of the filter, the HEPA+ Carbon filter usually needs replacing once every 12 months if used for 12 hours straight. But this is still dependent on the environment or location of the machine. Again, you can check the filter life through the Dyson Link app. That filter costs PHP 4,900 to replace.
To set up the Dyson Link app’s connection with the Purifier Cool Formaldehyde, this is what you need to do:
- Install the app on your phone and make sure you’re Bluetooth is on.
- Setup up a Dyson account if you don’t have one yet.
- Head to Add machine in the sidebar.
- Once found, press the power button on the Purifier Cool Formaldehyde to start the pairing process. It takes around a minute to pair.
- Select which room it’s in. It is helpful to name this so you can keep track of it.
- Set your location to see how the conditions in your area and indoors are like. And then you’re good to go.
If you’re savvier with tech, you can even use voice assistants like Alexa, Google Assistant, and Siri to control the Dyson Purifier Cool Formaldehyde.
