Samsung Galaxy A73, A53, A33 5G: First look

This story was originally published on March 17, 2022, and last updated on April 9, 2022.

After the debut of the Samsung Galaxy S22 series, Samsung is ready to introduce its upper entry-level/midrange for the first half of the year. There are five new Galaxy A series devices coming out that you can all get a quick look at in this story.

As Galaxy A series phones of the past, these are typically built for the younger Gen Z set. Those who are just about to leave school or start their first jobs. They are designed not just to handle the demands of work but also the needs of side hustles, creative work, or entertainment and socializing.

Samsung is trying to reach a diverse set of users working within the price range we’ve mentioned earlier. It’s also bringing some of the features you typically see in the more expensive offerings. With the five devices just launched, it’s not hard to find a smartphone to meet your needs. Let’s get a better look at each of them.

Samsung Galaxy A73 5G

Let’s start with the premium one of the bunch. The Samsung Galaxy A72 gets refreshed with the 5G-ready Galaxy A73. It’s nice to have this released with 5G out of the gate, which its predecessor didn’t have. The Galaxy A73 features a 6.7-inch FHD+ Super AMOLED Infinity-O display with a 120Hz refresh rate.

It gets four cameras at the back, including the Galaxy A series’ first 108-megapixel primary shooter, 12-megapixel ultra-wide, 5-megapixel bokeh, and 5-megapixel macro. In front, the selfie camera is a 32-megapixel sensor. Samsung is arming this series with features like Night Mode, Advanced Portrait Mode, Fun Mode (adding fun filters, etc.), and smooth, lifelike video quality. All phones get OIS for clearer photos and videos, even in Auto.

The Qualcomm Snapdragon 778G chip powers this handset with 6GB or 8GB of RAM and 128GB or 256GB of expandable storage (up to 1TB). It also has the expected 5,000mAh battery with 25W fast-charging support. This model and the other 5G handsets (A53 and A33) have IP67 ratings.

You can get this model in Awesome Gray, Awesome White, and Awesome Mint. The Mint is an exclusive color for this handset, but it doesn’t get color options like Awesome Blue and Awesome Peach. The latter I’m particularly disappointed about.

The Galaxy A series, the Galaxy A73 5G, will be available starting April 22. It will be available in all authorized Samsung Stores and online for:

  • 8GB + 256GB – PHP 29,990 (around USD 573 converted)
  • 8GB + 128GB – PHP 27,990 (around USD 535)
  • 6GB + 128GB (online exclusive) – PHP 26,990 (around USD 523)

Those who pre-order from April 17 to 21 will get a PHP 5,000 (around USD 97) Samsung Online Store voucher.

Samsung Galaxy A53 5G

Now, if you don’t need that 108-megapixel sensor and want a slightly smaller phone, there’s the Samsung Galaxy A53 5G. It comes with a 64-megapixel quad-camera setup and the same ultrawide, bokeh, macro, and selfie sensors.

The Galaxy A53 5G has a 6.5-inch FHD+ Super AMOLED display with a 120Hz refresh rate as well. It runs on an Exynos 1280 chip with either 6GB or 8GB of RAM, 128GB or 256GB of storage, and a 5,000mAh battery with 25W fast wired charging.

Samsung offers the Galaxy A53 5G in Awesome Black, Awesome White, Awesome Blue, and Awesome Peach.

The Galaxy A53 5G will be available starting April 1 in all authorized Samsung Stores and online for:

  • 8GB + 256GB – PHP 25,490 (around USD 487)
  • 8GB + 128GB – PHP 23,490 (around USD 448)
  • 6GB + 128GB (online exclusive) – PHP 22,990 (around USD 439)

Samsung Galaxy A33 5G

Another smaller Samsung Galaxy A option is this Galaxy A33. This device is another 5G-ready Galaxy A phone running Exynos 1280 with the same RAM and storage options, battery capacity, and charging speed, too. It has a 6.4-inch FHD+ Super AMOLED Infinity-U display with a 90Hz refresh rate.

As for the camera setup, it has a 48-megapixel primary, 8-megapixel ultra-wide, 5-megapixel macro, 2-megapixel bokeh, and a 13-megapixel selfie camera. Your color options are also identical to the Galaxy A53 5G.

The Galaxy A33 5G will also be available at all authorized Samsung Stores and online beginning April 22 for:

  • 8GB + 256GB – PHP 21,990 (around USD 420)
  • 8GB + 128GB – PHP 19,990 (around USD 382)
  • 6GB +128GB (online exclusive) – PHP 18,990 (around USD 363)
  • 8GB + 128GB, White (online exclusive) – PHP 19,990 (around USD 382)
  • 8GB + 256GB, White (online exclusive) – PHP 21,990 (around USD 420)

Samsung Galaxy A23

If 5G isn’t a priority for you and you want a device with a relatively large display, there’s the Galaxy A23. It has a 6.6 FHD+ TFT V-cut screen with a 90Hz refresh rate and 20:9 aspect ratio.

This Snapdragon 680-powered handset comes with 6GB RAM and 128GB of expandable storage. Battery capacity is at 5,000mAh, and it also supports 25W charging, but as we’ve learned in a pre-event briefing with Samsung, the fast charger will not be included in the box.

This smartphone also gets a quad-camera arrangement, including a 50-megapixel primary lens, 5-megapixel ultra-wide, 2-megapixel depth, and 2-megapixel macro. The selfie shooter in front is an 8-megapixel camera. Like the Galaxy A53 and A33, it comes in the four “awesome” colors Samsung offers.

Samsung Galaxy A13

Now, here’s the baby of the bunch, one that’s also still built for both productivity and fun. Samsung arms the Galaxy A13 with a 6.6-inch Infinity-V TFT Display with added features of FHD+ resolution (over its predecessor’s HD+ resolution) and 20:9 aspect ratio. It gets a 50-megapixel quad-camera setup with 5-megapixel ultra-wide with 123-degree field of vision, 2-megapixel depth, and 2-megapixel macro. In front, there’s an 8-megapixel selfie camera.

The Galaxy A13 is powered by an Exynos 850 processor, 4GB or 6GB of RAM, and 128GB internal storage that’s expandable up to 1TB via microSD. This dual SIM device runs on the Android 12-based One UI Core. It has a 5,000mAh battery with support for 15W fast-charging to get you through your day. There will be three color options: Peach, Light Blue, and Black.

There are no local prices yet for the Galaxy A23 and A13, but we’ll make sure to update you when we get news!

This story is still developing. We’ll update pricing when we get official prices and preorder details.
