Apple has yet to announce a specific release date for its latest iOS version. But we can typically expect the software updates to drop around the fall. It might be months away, but will the iPhone you’re using now be compatible with the iOS 16 update?
iOS 16 will no longer support a few older devices. If you use a smartphone released in 2016 or earlier, you’ll no longer receive the iOS 16 update. This means phones like the iPhone 6S, iPhone SE, and iPhone 7 series won’t get the update.
Your phone will still work, but you will no longer get the shiny new features that the software update will bring. You need to pay attention to whether you’re still getting security updates to your device. These updates help protect you against any critical vulnerabilities that might hit your iPhone. This is one page to bookmark to check for the latest Apple security updates.
Now, if you have an iPhone 8 or later, you will get the iOS 16 update. Just wait for its release to drop. The public beta is expected to come out this month. But as with any beta update, you could run into bugs and issues, so this isn’t a route I’d recommend for typical users.

How to check what iPhone model you have?
Are you unsure what iPhone model you have? You can check that quickly on your phone. All you have to do is open the Settings app and then scroll to General > About. Under the Model Name entry, you’ll see what kind of iPhone you have.
So, if you want access to the new features Apple is introducing with the iOS 16 update and already have an iPhone supporting the update, you might not need to buy a new device this time.
