Moto Razr 2022 & Xiaomi Mix Fold 2: Noteworthy features to check out

Samsung might have set the tone for foldables, but it isn’t the only brand working on devices in the space. And that’s exciting for us because we get more options.

As Samsung announced the Galaxy Z Fold4 and Flip4, Motorola and Xiaomi announced the Moto Razr 2022 and Mix Fold 2, respectively.

But what do the new Moto Razr 2022 and Xiaomi Mix Fold 2 bring to the table? Let’s take a quick look at them.

Let’s talk about Moto Razr 2022 & Xiaomi Mix Fold 2’s design

Of course, the Moto Razr 2022 takes inspiration from the trendy flip phone, the Moto Razr. We’re not at the point where the phone can be as thin as the original Razr, but it does get that pocketability right.

Motorola has designed a better, thinner, and more sturdy hinge for this 2022 model that bends in a pear shape when closing. It also got rid of the notch in favor of a punch hole for its selfie camera. We are a bit disappointed that it only comes in black, though.

As for the Xiaomi Mix Fold 2, the company is taking the fight to Samsung with its thinnest folding phone yet. It’s a mere 5.4mm thin unfolded and 11.2mm in its closed state. That brings the camera bump into account. For context, the Galaxy Z Fold4 measures 6.3mm unfolded and 15.8mm folded.

Xiaomi refined its hinge using alloy and carbon fiber plates. It gets a recessed center structure and compact layer design.

As for colors, it doesn’t just come in black. You can get it in gold, too.

Those folding screens

The Moto Razr 2022 gets a larger 6.7-inch display with flagship display technologies like a 144Hz refresh rate and HDR10+ support. Its external display is still 2.7 inches with an 800 x 573 resolution. If you find the Galaxy Z Flip4’s screen too small, you might appreciate Motorola’s take on this feature.

If the book-style foldable is what you prefer, the Xiaomi Mix Fold 2 has a 6.56-inch AMOLED cover screen. It has a 21:9 aspect ratio closer to your standard slab smartphone and a 120Hz refresh rate, with its screen protected by Corning Gorilla Glass Victus. Xiaomi added a 20-megapixel selfie camera housed in a punch hole cutout.

The primary screen has an 8-inch LTPO2 OLED with a 1-120Hz variable refresh rate and 2,160 x 1,914 resolution. It has what’s called an Eco2 OLED display that removes the polarizer layer for improved display transparency and lower power consumption. It reaches a peak brightness of 1,300 nits. This inner screen also supports HDR10+ and Dolby Vision, and Schott ultra-thin glass protects it.

Capture memories with these cameras

Motorola updates the Moto Razr 2022 with a dual camera setup, including a 50-megapixel 1/1.55″ sensor with optical image stabilization and a 13-megapixel ultrawide-angle camera with a 121-degree field of view. That 50-megapixel sensor is similar to the Motorola Edge 30 Pro and S30 Pro’s sensors. If you want to take selfies or answer video calls with the camera on the inner display, that’s a solitary 32-megapixel camera.

For the Xiaomi Mix Fold 2, the company takes advantage of its partnership with Leica to develop its cameras. It has a 50-megapixel Sony IMX766 with optical image stabilization and Leica optics. This foldable has the Xiaomi 12S Ultra‘s Leica Authentic and Vibrant photographic styles, including some Leica filters.

The Mix Fold 2 gets a 13-megapixel ultrawide and an 8-megapixel telephoto with 2x optical zoom to complete the rear camera setup.

What powers the Moto Razr 2022 & Xiaomi Mix Fold2?

Similar to the new Samsung foldables, the Qualcomm Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 chip powers the Moto Razr 2022 and the Xiaomi Mix Fold 2. Motorola’s foldable has a MyUI 4.0 interface, while Xiaomi’s option uses its MIUI Fold 13 interface.

Memory and storage configurations for the Moto Razr 2022 are 8GB/128GB, 8GB/256GB, and 12GB/512GB. Meanwhile, the Xiaomi Mix Fold 2 is available in 12GB RAM with 256GB, 512GB, or 1TB of storage. Both don’t get storage expansion.

The Moto Razr 2022 runs on a 3,500mAh battery with 33W fast-charging support. That’s a significant boost from the Moto Razr 5G’s 2,800mAh battery with 15W charging support.

On the other hand, the Xiaomi Mix Fold 2 has a 4,500mAh battery with 67W fast wired charging.

Neither device doesn’t have wireless charging or reverse charging, so it’s something to keep in mind if that’s important to you.

How much do they cost?

A roadblock to getting either device is you’ll need to be in China. Both launched in that market without any announcements about international availability yet.

The Moto Razr 2022 gets a starting price of CNY 5,999 (around USD 886) and goes up to CNY 7,299 (~USD 1,078), while the Xiaomi Mix Fold 2 has a starting price of CNY 8,999 (~USD 1,329) and maxes out at CNY 11,999 (~USD 1,771).

As the foldable market expands, we’re glad to see more cool devices take up space in the segment. If you could get your hands on either device, which one would you pick? Let us know on social media!
