Xiaomi Redmi A1: First look

Xiaomi is bringing one of its newer, more affordable devices into the country. And as we welcome the Xiaomi Redmi A1, it will be even more affordable during this introductory phase.

The handset will cost only PHP 3,999 (around USD 68) from October 29 until November 13 before it reverts to its retail price of PHP 4,499 (~USD 76). After this promo, Xiaomi will also offer a free Bluetooth speaker to buyers until supplies last.

A simple, eye-catching look

The Xiaomi Redmi A1 has one of my favorite designs for an entry-level phone this year. Xiaomi sent over the refreshing-looking Light Blue option, but you can get it in Light Green and Black. The back has this leatherette feel which keeps smudges and dirt at bay. It means you don’t have to hide it behind a case.

The phone curves slightly on the back to help with grip. In front, you get a 6.52-inch HD+ display with a 20:9 aspect ratio.

What powers the Redmi A1

As an entry-level phone, expect basic specs on the Xiaomi Redmi A1. This dual-SIM device runs on a MediaTek Helio A22 processor with 3GB of RAM and 64GB of expandable storage (via a dedicated microSD slot).

The upside to this minimal setup is Xiaomi opted to run this phone on Android 12 (Go Edition). This lightweight version of Android allows for a smoother experience. Somehow, there are still a few pre-installed apps squeezed in here, but scrolling feels more fluid, and it has that Material You look.

We’re still trying out its cameras, but temper your expectations since you get an 8-megapixel rear (paired with a negligible QVGA lens) and a 5-megapixel front camera.

Expect to get multiple days on a single charge with this phone. It has a 5,000mAh battery supporting 10W fast charging with the included charger.
