Canon EOS R50: Easy way to up your vlogging game

If you’re ready to graduate from smartphone vlogging and don’t know what camera to get, the new Canon EOS R50 appeals to budding content creators. This entry-level APS-C mirrorless camera packs many fun, creative, and automated features that are less intimidating for newbies.

This camera gets a 24.2-megapixel APS-C sensor. That’s three times larger than the 1-inch sensor on premium smartphones. It gives you sharper, more detailed images and videos with less grain in low light. It also helps you achieve that natural bokeh/shallow focus effect for beautiful portraits.

Video-ready camera

The Canon EOS R50 promises high-quality video. It produces cropless 4K 30p video oversampled from 6K worth of data. What that means for you is the camera gets more information with fewer artifacts and issues from your footage, with minimal effort required. You just need to shoot and focus on the story you want to tell.

With a Dual Pixel CMOS AF II system, the Canon EOS R50 can detect and track everything from people, animals (dogs, cats, and birds), and even vehicles (motorsports, cars, and motorcycles). And if you show off products while you’re in the frame (think beauty vlogger or tech creator), a Close-up Demo mode automatically switches focus from you and whatever’s closest to the camera.

This vlogging cam is also ready for walking and talking vlogs. It offers two different Movie IS (Image Stabilizer) levels that digitally perform 5-axis camera shaker correction. You can enhance that further with an RF lens with in-lens image stabilization.

If you’re using the R50 in “selfie” mode, Canon suggests you use the Movie IS: Enhanced mode for optimized handheld wide-angle shooting. It reduces unwanted motion that’s more obvious at the edges of wide-angle images. There are two levels to choose from, which you can activate by tapping the Wide-angle button. It’s a feature to use so your selfies/vlogs don’t look like extreme close-ups all the time.

An auto-leveling mode ensures your footage isn’t tilted. And I love that Canon adds an Aspect Ratio Marker that makes it easier to set up your shoot, whether you’re doing short-form verticals, YouTube-style landscape shots, or more.

You just need one cable to connect the Canon EOS R50 to your laptop and up your live-stream game. The Camera Connect app allows wireless photo and video transfers from the camera to your smartphone.

And the camera itself is light enough to carry around with you. It comes in at 375g.
