GoPro is back with a new action camera you can take on your adventures, whether that be action-filled, outdoor escapades or more laidback trips you want to record for posterity. The new GoPro HERO12 Black is here for you. And I’m doing a quick rundown on some of the pretty cool features you could get a lot of use of.
Vertical video experience
The GoPro HERO12 Black gets a new vertical video capture mode that won’t require you to change the position of the camera. If you have it mounted horizontally, you can keep it that way.
GoPro also highlights its 8:7 aspect ratio. Its large 1/1.9″ sensor allows this camera to capture this wider frame. That means you can easily crop into vertical (9:16 aspect ratio), widescreen (16:9), traditional (4:3), or keep that 8:7 frame.

It now works across all the camera modes and video resolutions, too. This makes it easier to use your footage across different platforms. If you want an even wider view, there’s a new Max Lens Mod 2.0 accessory that offers a 36% wider field of view when recording in widescreen or a 48% taller field of view for vertical vids.
Speaking of its resolutions, here’s what you can expect:
- 5.3K video,
- 8x slo-mo in up to 2.7K resolution,
- 4K video at up to 120 frames per second for 4x slo-mo,
- up to 24.7-megapixel frame grabs,
- and 27-megapixel photos.
Wireless audio support
Now, if you want to narrate what’s happening, you can easily connect a pair of Apple AirPods or other Bluetooth-enabled wireless devices to record audio straight to the GoPro HERO12 Black. Connecting a wireless audio device allows you to control the GoPro using voice commands from a distance. It’ll simplify the process of recording your content!

A pop of color
If you’re looking for that eye-popping, high dynamic range look in your photos or videos, the GoPro HERO12 Black supports HDR photo and video (for 5.3K and 4K recording). There’s also GP-Log with LUT support to give professional users more control in post-production.

Still stable and sturdy
You don’t have to worry about stability either. The GoPro HERO12 Black gets GoPro’s Emmy Award-winning video stabilization with 360-degree Horizon Lock. This ensures that your videos stay stable while maintaining the smallest cropping margin possible.

This GoPro can easily go on adventures with you. The HERO12 Black is waterproof up to 33 feet without additional housing needed. And if you’re a GoPro subscriber, you get access to “no questions asked” damaged camera replacement. (You can learn more about that policy here.)
2x longer runtime on the GoPro HERO12 Black
GoPro improved the power management system on the HERO12 Black to offer these potential runtimes:
- 70 minutes of continuous recording at 5.3K60 (HERO12 Black’s highest performance setting),
- over 95 minutes at 5.3K30,
- and over 155 minutes of continuous recording at 1080p30, all with HyperSmooth 6.0 video stabilization on.
Pro-grade features
For creators and professionals who need the extra tools, the GoPro HERO12 Black has a bunch of features to help make the recording and editing process easier.
If you do multi-camera setups, you can sync an unlimited number of HERO12 Black cameras for easier editing. The timecode sync will work with leading editing apps like Final Cut Pro and Adobe Premier.

GoPro subscribers can also easily back up their footage. the camera will automatically upload your content to the GoPro cloud when it’s charging. It’ll even send out an automatic highlight video you can share. GoPro doesn’t limit the amount of footage you can upload and it promises to store these at 100% source quality.
The GoPro Quik app is also getting a desktop version soon. Subscribers will get access to this version of that app. Your projects on mobile can easily be ported to the desktop so you can pick up where you left off. The Quik desktop app is coming to the Mac on November 1, while the Windows version will arrive in 2024.
