Meet the Looking Glass Go: The future of holograms

What if you could preserve your favorite memories in a hologram? Looking Glass brings this sci-fi vision to life with the Looking Glass Go. It’s the world’s first portable holographic display. And it can even interact with you thanks to support for generative artificial intelligence.

The device comes with a six-inch display and is thinner than your typical smartphone. Unlike other holographic devices, you won’t need special glasses, eye-tracking tech, or headsets to get the Looking Glass Go to work. It promises a standalone, multi-viewer 3D experience, making it more accessible to more people.

Turn your photos into holograms

There are different ways to show off holographic images on the Looking Glass Go. You can start with the two-dimensional photograph you want to immortalize in this unique way. The Go’s algorithm and block.glass platform can create multiple perspectives to turn your photos into these 3D holograms you can enjoy. When it’s done converting these images, it’ll just send it wirelessly to your display.

You can also shoot spatial photos from your phone, with the Looking Glass software turning those into a hologram. If you want to try 3D cinematic video, that’s also possible with the latest iPhones (iPhone 13 to 15) using the LiDar sensors on these devices.

Taking advanced spatial photography with the Looking Glass Go

This device can also support content from advanced spatial photo generators like Luma AI and 3D spatial art tools. These technologies allow you to capture and relive your favorite moments from every angle you want.

And while it supports Wi-Fi, where you can receive holograms from the cloud, you can also store thousands on the local memory, so you can have this revolving door of options for holograms to show off and keep with you.

If you want to turn it into your high-tech picture frame, Looking Glass will offer a snap-on frame from the device.

Looking Glass Go as an AI companion?

Beyond just displaying your memories, the Looking Glass Go is a device you can interact with through support for apps like Liteforms and MakeAvatar.

Liteforms can let you create AI-powered 3D characters based on a photo, while MakeAvatar gives you a more anime-like character to converse with. And you can talk to them because these are basically holographic forms of ChatGPT.

And if you want to work on holographic apps, it supports the plugins and libraries for Unity, Unreal, Blender, and WebXR.

What else you need to know

The Looking Glass Go can run indefinitely through USB-C. But you can also take it with you and have it run for up to a couple of hours through the optional battery pack. The device itself doesn’t come with a built-in battery. Instead, you can get swappable batteries for it.

The Looking Glass Go’s original Kickstarter price of USD 199. It has earned more than 558% of its funding goal. The company plans to ship the device by June 2024.

It’s pretty awesome how you can use your phone to make these 3D scans and have the Looking Glass Go turn these into realistic holograms you can display. And that added AI component makes it an easy recommendation for Cool Tech of the Week!
