Huawei Pocket 2: First look

After two years, Huawei’s finally back with a new version of its flip phone, the Huawei Pocket 2. And it gets upgrades across the board.

Huawei finally brings a waterdrop hinge to its flip phone made with what it calls aerospace-grade “rocket steel.” This means you get a zero-gap design when folded. For durability, it gets second-generation Kunlun glass technology. It also gets an IPX8 rating for water resistance.

The company adds more beautiful color options for the Huawei Pocket 2. You see the sleek Tahitian Gray here but there’s also Rococo White (similar to what we’ve seen on the Huawei P60 Pro), Purple, Black, and a more premium Art version in Dream Blue.

The displays are larger, too. Instead of a 6.90-inch foldable OLED, the Huawei Pocket 2 features a 6.94-inch LPTO OLED. And while the circular outer display carries over from its predecessor, it’s slightly larger at 1.15-inch instead of 1.04-inch. This HarmonyOS 4 device gets more customization options for that cover screen. You can have a clock, mood wallpaper, animated pet GIF, or avatar.

That cover screen also serves as a preview display for this foldie’s cameras. But you might find it wanting, especially given the larger screens we see on its competitors now. If you want to be discouraged from doom-scrolling, you might like this look.

Speaking of cameras, the Huawei Pocket 2 gets four rear cameras this time, a first for any flip. This time, it gets a 50-megapixel primary shooter with OIS and an f/1.6 aperture, a 12-megapixel ultrawide, an 8-megapixel telephoto with OIS and a 3x optical zoom, and a new 2-megapixel UV sensor. This hyperspectral camera detects UV intensity to see if you’ve properly applied your sunscreen. Inside, there’s a 10.7-megapixel sensor.

The Huawei Pocket 2 beats out the battery capacity of the OPPO Find N3 Flip (at 4,300mAh) with its 4,520mAh battery. It’s also the company’s first flip to get 40W wireless charging paired with its 66W wired charging.

I dealt with heating issues on the Huawei P50 Pocket. But Huawei claims the Pocket 2 gets better cooling, so that’s something to look forward to.

Huawei hasn’t shared chipset info in a while. But this phone is believed to run on a Kirin 9000S processor paired with 12GB of RAM and 256GB, 512GB, and 1TB storage. The Pocket 2 Art Version gets a higher 16GB RAM and 1TB storage combo.

In China, Huawei also adds two-way satellite messaging support through Beidou. So, you can stay connected even in areas without cell coverage.

As you may have guessed, it’s currently only available in China at these prices:

  •  CNY 7,499 (around USD 1,040) for 256 GB storage,
  • CNY 7,999 (~USD 1,110) for 512GB,
  • CNY 8,499 (~USD 1,180) for 1TB, and
  • CNY 10,999 (~USD 1,500) for the Dream Blue Art Version.
