Leica SL3: A powerful update for pro photographers

Leica recently announced the latest iteration of its full-frame mirrorless camera system, the SL3. Building upon the success of the 2019 SL2, the Leica SL3 boasts a robust feature set geared towards professional photographers.

Under the hood of the Leica SL3

Internally, the SL3 mirrors the impressive technology of the Leica Q3. It houses a high-resolution 60-megapixel sensor, an improved autofocus system, and the capability to capture stunning 8K video footage. It has a dynamic range of 15 f-stops and an ISO range of 50 to 100,000 for breathtakingly detailed images in any lighting condition.

The Leica SL3 features intelligent subject recognition with phase detection (PDAF) and contrast detection (Contrast Detection AF) technologies.

Better ergonomics

The Leica SL3 truly shines in its hardware upgrades designed for professional use. It’s slightly smaller than the SL2, but not by much. It’s still a hefty camera.

Here’s a quick size comparison:

SL2

  • Dimensions: 146 x 107 x 83mm
  • Weight: approx. 840 g (without battery)

SL3

  • Dimensions: 141.2 x 108 x 84.6 mm
  • Weight: approx. 769g (without battery, SD card, camera bayonet cover)

It features a substantial hand grip for extended shooting comfort and weather-sealed construction with an IP54 rating, providing peace of mind in harsh environments.

Enhanced user experience

Beyond the technical specifications, the SL3 prioritizes user experience with a focus on efficient operation. Leica has incorporated several functional improvements:

  • An additional programmable dial for swift access to key functions
  • A repositioned button layout on the rear for convenient single-thumb control
  • A redesigned power button with an LED indicator for quick status and battery checks

Connectivity options have expanded to include a full-sized HDMI 2.1 port and a CFexpress Type B slot alongside the standard SD card slot. This camera also has a tilting 3.2-inch LCD touchscreen and a timecode interface for professional video workflows.

Software tailored for efficiency and personalization

Leica has revamped the user interface for improved clarity and navigation. Icons are simplified with higher contrast, and the video menu is distinguished with a distinct color scheme (red for photo and yellow for video).

Most significantly, the Leica SL3 offers extensive customization options. Those with high-end Nikon cameras have something similar. You can personalize the functions of the three external dials, several buttons, and the internal menu layout. This level of control caters to photographers who prefer to tailor their camera operation to their specific workflow.

Leica SL3: Price and first thoughts

While the Leica SL3 retains the brand’s characteristic premium price point at USD 6,995 (body only), exceeding comparable offerings from Nikon and Sony, it delivers a powerful package.

Photographers seeking a camera that combines top-tier specs, a robust build for professional use, a clean German design, and extensive customization capabilities will find the Leica SL3 an attractive option.
