OPPO is ready for beta users in Indonesia, Malaysia, and Thailand to use the Android 12-based ColorOS 12 public beta. It’s rolling out first to the OPPO Find X3 Pro, and it will be coming to 52 of the company’s devices by the end of 2022. More models covering more countries and regions will be announced in the coming months.

The beta will only work on unlocked phones, meaning carrier models won’t get the beta.
OPPO also shared new information on its update policy, specifically for OPPO devices released from 2019 onwards. The flagship Find X series will get three major Android updates and four regular security patch updates. Reno and some A series phones will get two Android updates and three years of security updates. And low-memory A series devices will get one Android update. It doesn’t surpass Samsung’s four-year policy, unfortunately.
Android Authority shared a slightly different update schedule earlier this month. The Find X series gets a three-year update; the Reno, F, K, and Find Lite/Neo series get two years of updates; while “some” A series phones get a single OS update. But the site said OPPO is working on a “lighter version of ColorOS” for budget phones to meet the demand for updates in this segment.
As for security patches, the site said there are four years of security updates for the Find X, Reno, F, and K series, while the budget A series gets three years of security updates.
The company hasn’t mentioned its plans for global OnePlus devices, so for now, these devices will keep running on OxygenOS.
What can you expect with ColorOS 12?
OPPO wants users to get an experience closer to stock Android 12. The new operating system builds on OPPO’s Infinite Design concept with softer icons, animations, and an information framework accommodating different languages and cultures.
ColorOS 12 also addresses the lags and stutters after prolonged use, improving anti-fragmentation and intelligent resource allocation. This improvement leads to a 2.75% system aging rate in three years, 30% lower memory occupation, and 20% lower battery consumption.
The OS has new Quantum Animation Engines that adopt 300 improved animations to achieve life-like effects, incorporating physical habits of resistance, inertia, and rebound.
The new mobile OS brings security upgrades like Privacy Dashboards, Approximate Location Sharing, and microphone and camera indicators. These build on OPPO’s security features like Private System, App locks, Private Safe, and more.
Other practical improvements include PC Connect, 3-Finger Translate powered by Google Lens, Phone Manager, and FlexDrop.
