Jackery introduces a rooftop tent that doubles as a solar generator

Jackery plans to make the rooftop tent pull double duty as a solar generator, allowing you to go off the grid for a weekend or longer. The company will show off the tent as a concept at CES 2024, but Jackery plans to put this tent into production sometime near the end of 2024. So, if you’re an overlander, van-lifer, or weekend warrior who wants to take your modern amenities or work with you, you’ll want to keep your eye out for this.

You should expect the retractable solar panels to produce up to 1000W when the car is parked and the tent is open and facing south. That should be enough to generate 4.96kWh per day in the western US or 4kWh as you move east. We don’t know yet what its resilience to wind will be, but it is a concept for now, after all.

What’s great about this solution from Jackery is it maximizes power generation by filling the entire roof of the tent with solar cells. It then extends outwards while neatly integrating the wiring needed to feed the power station.

This concept tent will feed a separate 1.26kWh E1000 Plus powerstation with a 2000W AC output. That should power things like:

  • a 1150W portable air conditioner for about one hour,
  • a 60W car fridge for about 45 hours,
  • or a 900W electric cooker for an hour

It is also possible to charge the E1000 Plus from the car while driving (takes seven hours to full) or wall jack (1.7 hours).

It’s unknown who Jackery will team up with for the tent’s production. But the concept comes with a memory foam mattress, insulation, waterproof fabric with blackout windows, and dimmable lighting with color control. According to the company, the production model will come with “an onboard charging module.” We’re unclear what that means.
